premsela design forum milan ‘repair’

‘repair’

The idea of recycling often crops up in discussions of responsible, conscious production. At the Premsela design forum in Milan on 22th April, prominent figures in the field will discuss the value of an alternative: repair.

The designers Piet Hein Eek and Satyendra Pakhalé; Hermès director of innovations, Corinne Poux-Bernard; and Platform 21’s artistic director, Joanna van der Zanden, will share their views on the value of repair in the context of the global economic crisis. Author Marco Bevolo will moderate the discussion. Dutch minister of culture Ronald Plasterk will provide an introduction. Held during Milan design week, the Premsela design forum takes Platform 21’s current project, Platform 21 = repairing, as a point of departure. Platform 21’s repair manifesto has been receiving attention in the media, and 20.000 copies will be distributed in Milan.

Repair is environmentally friendly. In addition, it changes the relationship between the object and the user, making it enduring and unique. Replacing a part can also fundamentally alter a product’s character. Countless repair instructions can be found online; the forum will focus on repair’s cultural and social aspects.
