Design Academy Eindhoven (DAE) has initiated a design research project called GEO–DESIGN which aims to explore the social, economic, geographic, and geopolitical forces that shape the work of designers today. The first episode of the project started in August 2018. It seeks to trace the nebulous outlines of Alibaba. This Chinese retail company is best known as the world’s largest virtual shopping mall. But it is also an online platform, a financial institution, a social network, an innovation centre and a provider of educational channels. To sustain its multiple incarnations, Alibaba runs a vast logistics network that spans about half the globe, linking cities, ports, and large and small manufacturing facilities. Through all these different guises the company exercises an inescapable influence on every stage of today’s design process.

A group of nine designers, all DAE alumni, accepted the invitation to investigate Alibaba’s operational model, and its impact on the design discipline. The preliminary outcomes are now shown at the Eindhoven Van Abbemuseum. The exhibition Alibaba: From here to your home visualises standards that haven’t yet been integrated in a Western vision of design. It reveals new perspectives on the complex systems that have turned e-commerce giants such as Alibaba into influential geopolitical forces.
Alibaba. From here to your home is curated by Joseph Grima and Martina Muzi.
The exhibition presents the work of Arvid&Marie, Maxime Benvenuto, Allison Crank, Leif Czakai & Timm Donke, Jing He, Isabel Mager, Martina Muzi, Irene Stracuzzi, and Alice Wong.
