G18

The Graduation Show 2018 will be the first edition in almost two decades to take place outside the walls of Design Academy Eindhoven (DAE). This move to a venue on the site of the historic Campina Milk Factory reflects a major shift in the public’s perception of design and the role of DAE. ‘The relevance of design today’ says creative director Joseph Grima, ‘has vested us with a position in which we, as a profession, have unparalleled influence over our collective future. Now it is down to us, as an institution, to extend the horizon of design education in response, questioning and revisiting how we present our work and generate discourse and debate.’ G18 presents no less than 208 projects by 185 graduates, emerging the visitor in this inquisitive environment where design is constantly being redesigned.

The Graduation Show is part of the Dutch Design Week 2018 (20-28 October)

Projects

As always, the range of topics covered by the student work presented is vast. Some address human wellbeing, like Guts by Teddy Schuyers, who spoke in depth with wearers of colostomy bags about the limitations that this had on their daily lives. Thanks to her design it is possible to replace this medical aid with an accessory that is no longer associated with embarrassment but instead comfort, a degree of pride and an active, contemporary lifestyle. Others looked at the relevance of nature and ecology to daily life. Minji Choi’s project The Dignity of Plants, a garden in which nature and man-made blend, invites us to imagine a future in which human dominance of nature is no longer a foregone conclusion.

With Lingua Planta, Merle Bergers makes a physical experience from how scents in nature are actually a nuanced language of attraction, defence and rejection. With Tiger Penis Project, Kuang-Yi Ku works his way into the world of biotechnology to retain and renew the usual practices in traditional Chinese medicine, in which the use of animal organs threatens the existence of rare species. Through his project, he asks if technology could hold the key to manufacturing certain essential ingredients - such as the tiger penis - in the laboratory.

The Arena

The Graduation Show is more than just an exhibition of graduates’ work. As part of the show, the Arena offers a permanent platform for addressing aspects of design practice that underpin or transcend the object, and themes that connect them. Performances, films, presentations and debates are staged by graduates and prominent professionals from the design field and the extended DAE community. The audience can participate in the discussion of the influence of new technologies and the agency of the user, experience the different aspects of artificial olfactive molecules or see a performance exposing and liberating static body posture in offices.
